FDA grants first-ever modified risk orders to eight smokeless tobacco products.

In 2019, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration authorised products under the Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) to allow and encourage switching from cigarettes to smokeless tobacco products in order to lower tobacco induced health risks in an effort and thus to help prevent youth access and exposure to traditional cigarettes and other tobacco-led products. The available scientific evidence, including long-term epidemiological studies, shows that relative to cigarette smoking, exclusive use of these specific smokeless tobacco products poses lower risk of mouth cancer, heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis.
